Lucy the Snowman Plushie: Free Crochet Plushie Pattern

This year is my first winter in Los Angeles and while I love the sun and beaches, I feel like I missed winter completely. My friends and family back in Chicago have been sending me pictures of gardens full of snow and kiddos making snowmen. And it made me want a little bit of winter with me too. So I made myself a snowman plushie that can survive the LA weather! The is Lucy and you can get her full free crochet plushie pattern below!

For this pattern, I tried using poly pellets as well as the regular polyfill stuffing I use for my toys. I wanted Lucy to be able to stand on her own and since her base is round, the poly pellets were perfect for making the base of her body flat and weighted. This is the first time I’ve tried this but I think it worked well and it would be a nice thing to add to any of my plushie patterns!

Next time, though, I think I’ll add the pellets into a bit of fabric and tie it up before adding the polyfill – that would help keep the two separate so the pellets stay at the bottom as the toy is handled.

I really love how Lucy turned out, and although she’s being released in January, I think she fits in best with my Christmas plushies. I’ll have links to all the others below so you can check out the free crochet plushie patterns for things like the Ronald and Ginny the gingerbread people, Alexei the polar bear, and Comet the Reindeer, along with a few others!

Scarf:

For the scarf, hold 2 strands of yarn together and use a 3.75mm crochet hook.

Row 1: Start with a long tail, and chain 40. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull through the last chain.

Row 2: Starting with a long tail again, attach both strands to the 1st chain space of row 1 and SC along the chain (40). BO, leaving a long tail. Tie the tails on either side together for a fringe and trim to the same length.

Assembly

Now that we have all the pieces of this free crochet plushie pattern done, we just have to assemble them to make Lucy the Snowman!

First, twist two pieces of pipe cleaner together to make them stronger. Insert it through the body at the level you want the arms to be at, bend them slightly in the center to fit. Then fit one long tube of the arms over the pipe cleaner on either side and use the long tail yarn to sew it to the body. The tip of the pipe cleaner doesn’t need to go all the way to the end of the tube. Then place the smaller piece of the arm on the longer one and sew that in place as well for the rest of the branches.

Then, use the tail yarn from the body to attach the head. It helps to pin it in place so it doesn’t move around. Simply go through each stitch on the body and a corresponding space on the head. Then secure the yarn and hide the tail inside the head. Pin the carrot nose to the center of the face and use the tail yarn to sew that in place as well. Finally, dress Lucy in her hat and scarf and you’re good to go!

I love how Lucy turned out and I had a lot of fun making the little accessories for her. Sometimes, working on something that’s mostly one color can look a little boring (especially since I use white backgrounds), but I think the colors for the hat and scarf make up for it! She looks cozy and happy, and ready to spend the day playing out in the snow!
