Amos the Cupid Plushie: Free Crochet Pattern

Do you have a Valentine in mind? It’s almost V-day and this year, I wanted to make a little special plushie to commemorate my first Valentine’s Day as a married lady haha! I knew I wanted to make more mythical creatures and characters this year, so it was no problem deciding to make a cupid. I’m excited so let’s get right into this cupid plushie crochet pattern!

Amos is the kind of guy that gets along with everyone. He’s sweet and charming and really he listens to all of his friends. That makes him really good at helping them find the perfect people to fall in love with! Amos loves seeing all the people he cares about blossom when they feel loved and have someone to share it with. He might still be searching for his own love, but he knows good things take time so he’s happy to wait for The One!

Amos the Cupid Plushie: Free Crochet Pattern

For the cupid plushie crochet pattern, I wanted to make the design more like a little Greek boy than the usual baby in a diaper image of cupid. So I aged him up a little and gave him a toga! This toga was pretty simple to make and uses a little bit of surface slip stitching to get the details, but I will explain that later in the pattern. I also tried to give him a curly hairdo so please let me know how you think that turned out!

Toga:

Row 1: With white yarn, chain 46.

Rows 2-21: SC for 20 rows. BO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Row 1: With white yarn, chain 22.

Rows 2-8: SC for 7 rows. BO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Seam the larger piece into a tube with the short sides together. Then attach a new length of gold yarn to the first round and surface slip stitch around. I have a video here explaining how to do that. Then trim the yarn, reattach it one row down, and surface slip stitch another round. Repeat for two rounds of gold at the bottom of the tube as well.

Then work a line of gold surface slip stitches along each of the long sides of the smaller piece. Using the tail yarn in white from the small piece, sew the short ends of the small piece to the tube to make the arm strap of the toga. You can also do this after assembling the cupid plushie if that helps to position the strap better. Weave in all the ends and trim the excess yarn.

Bow:

Round 1: With yarn in brown, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).

Rounds 3-31: SC around for 28 rounds and BO, leaving a tail. Cut 2 pieces of pipe cleaner to the length of the tube and twist them together to make it stronger, then insert the pipe cleaner into the tube. Use the tail yarn and a tapestry needle to seam the opening shut. Then bend the tube to match the shape below for the bow.

Thread a needle with white yarn and attach it to one end of the bow with a small stitch. Pull the needle through the other end of the bow to create the bowstring and secure it with a stitch. Trim the yarn and hide the ends inside the bow.

Arrow heart:

Round 1: With yarn in red, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

Round 2: 2SC in the first space, (SC, HDC) into the next, 3DC into the next space. Slip stitch into the next stitch and 3DC into the same space. (HDC, SC) into the next space, and 2SC into the last space. BO and glue or stitch the heart to a toothpick for an arrow.

Halo:

With two strands of gold yarn held together, create a slip knot and chain 42. Cut the yarn and pull through the last chain to finish. Sew the chain into a loop. Weave in the loose ends. You can leave the halo as it is now, so it’s removable, or you can glue or stitch it in place to the hair when you assemble.

Assembly

Now that we have all the parts of our cupid plushie crochet pattern ready, we can start assembling him! Add stuffing to the legs, body, and arms if you haven’t already. Then use the tail yarn you left to sew the arms onto the body. Use the tail from the legs to attach the legs to the body.

Next, use the tail from the body to attach the head, going through one space on the body to one space on the head. Embroider on a nose with small stitches and the same yarn as the head. Then add a little blush for rosy cheeks. Using real blush and a small brush is the easiest and most natural way to do it, but you can also use paint, a marker, or even embroider some blushes on!

Then place the hair onto the head with the bumpy side (wrong side) facing out and use pins to hold it in place as you sew it on using a tapestry needle and the tail yarn you left. Once the hair is sewn on, you can use superglue or a few small stitches to secure the halo on top of it. Finally, dress the cupid plushie in his toga and give him his bow and arrow to finish it off!

Isn’t Amos the cutest! I love the way he turned out and I had fun making him. The hair was a bit of a different technique for me but I think the way it looks like curly hair is nice. Let me know what you guys think of Amos the cupid in the comments below!
