So, I’ve been playing with the idea of creating more amigurumi toys and plushies for unusual creatures. I love magical and mythical beasts, so I thought I would try my hand at creating one that I know everyone loves: a unicorn! This is Aurora the Unicorn and she is so stinking cute! This crochet unicorn pattern is a remake of one of my older patterns. Since I started making these plushies, I’ve really developed my style and I hope you love this crochet unicorn pattern! I can’t wait to share more of the little beasties I’ve been working on.

This crochet unicorn pattern was so much fun to work up, especially for the mane. I started by creating all of the body pieces and assembling everything but the wings. For the hair, I used a multicolored pastel yarn that made that gradient look for me. Basically, I attached each strand of hair as a tassel on the head and then I brushed the yarn out until it was fluffy. Finally, I used a little trick I learned to make the hair fall softly and add a little bit of shine to it. I even gave Aurora a little haircut to finish! The entire process was much easier than it sounds, and it will be explained below.
I did have a different version of this crochet unicorn pattern up before and you can see her below. This is the updated version of Aurora because my style had changed so much since the original pattern was published, and there were some things I needed to fix anyways. But, I still loved her too! Instead of removing her pattern entirely, I’ve left the first pattern available on Etsy and Ravelry, but this pattern will be for the new version. I hope you like them both!
The full free pattern is written out below. For those who’d prefer to print the pattern and take it with you for on-the-go and to markup as you go, you can buy the inexpensive printable PDF from my Etsy and Ravelry shops. The PDF is formatted without ads or comments, so it’s easy to read.

Tail:
With white and a 3.25mm hook, chain 11, turn and SC 10. Bind off. Add hair the same way we do the mane below (after assembly).
Assembly:
Now that we have all the pieces done let’s start assembling this crochet unicorn pattern! Start adding the features to the head. Use the tail yarn on the horn and a tapestry needle to sew the horn onto the head going through each of the spaces at the base of the horn. Then sew the ears onto the head on either side of the horn.
Next, use the tail yarn of the body and a tapestry needle to sew the head onto the body. Be sure to go through all the spaces of the body and a corresponding stitch in the head to make sure it doesn’t wobble. Then, sew the legs onto either side of the body going through both sides of the leg and a space on the body. Repeat for the arms.
Mane & Tail
Before we attach the wings, let’s add the hair. The wings tend to get in the way for this part so it’s easier to attach them later. Using a multicolored yarn or individual yarns in the colors you choose for the hair, cut strips between 6 to 10 inches long. It’s totally up to you how long you want the hair to be. For the original, I made the hair longer and for this one, I made it shorter.
Then pick a spot you want to place the hair and insert your hook under that stitch. Fold a strip of yarn over the hook, pull up a loop and pull the ends through. Continue adding hair around the head in this way until you have a mane as full as you like.
Then, gently brush out the hair using a pet grooming brush to fluff it out. You can untwist the strands of yarn first to make it easier or just go in sections. There will be fluff removed but don’t worry!
After brushing out the hair, use a flat iron on the lowest heat setting to lightly smoothe out the hair. You just want the heat to run across the yarn for a light pass, so it flattens. Then brush through it one more time and style the hair! Don’t forget to add a couple of strands to the tail too.
Finally, sew the wings onto the back and you’re done!
And you’re done!
I hope you love the new and improved crochet unicorn pattern. I love this version of Aurora and I think she fits my style more now, but I also really adore the original pattern too. I have both versions up on Etsy and Ravelry if you’d like to grab the PDFs.
