Aurora the Unicorn Lovey: Free Crochet Lovey Pattern

Hello friends and welcome to another day of the One Skein Makes blog hop! I’m so excited to be sharing my pattern for this event with you all today! For those of you that haven’t met me before, I’m Shehla and I love making colorful and fun things like toys and baby blankets. With all the toys I make, I tend to have a lot of scraps of bright colors leftover from other projects. So today, I’m using some white yarn and all of my colorful scraps to make a unicorn lovey that works with whatever you have laying around. So let’s get on to the free crochet lovey pattern!

Loveys are great little gifts for babies. They’re small enough for little ones to hold onto and carry around, and they’re a great mix of toys and blankets. Things like this unicorn lovey pattern don’t take very long to make either which makes it perfect for that last-minute present! I made loveys in all different designs for my craft fairs this year and they were always a hit with parents looking for something unique.

Aurora here is a unicorn lovey, but I also have a full version of the Aurora plushie available as well, complete with hair and wings and gold-tipped hooves! The two of these together would be a cute set to gift for a baby or any littles who wants some color. Most of my free crochet lovey patterns have the head and body worked together, but for this one, we actually work them separately and then sew them together at the end. That’s because the shape of the head is a little different here and connects better when we make them as separate pieces. I’ll show you how to do that down below.

Now that we have all the pieces done let’s start assembling this crochet unicorn lovey! Start adding the features to the head. Use the tail yarn on the horn and a tapestry needle to sew the horn onto the head going through each of the spaces at the base of the horn. Then sew the ears onto the head on either side of the horn.

Next, align the head to the center of the blanket. Use the long tail yarn from the blanket to sew the head securely to the blanket. Make sure to go through a few spaces around the base of the head and not just one spot to keep the head from wobbling and give it more of a stable base. Weave in all the ends of the blanket and trim the excess yarn to finish!

Finish by weaving in the ends from the colors changes and you’re done! I love how this little rainbow unicorn lovey pattern turned out and I think it would be a sweet little gift to have the lovey and full version of Aurora the Unicorn Plushie as a set. The pattern for Aurora is below if you’d like to make her as well!

I only used enough for one round of each color for the free crochet lovey pattern, and you only need a bit for the hair on the full plushie so you can make the hair match at the lovey if you like! For mine, I used soft pastel colors for the hair on the full Aurora and scraps for what I had for the lovey but I still think they go together nicely!

This lovey was so fun to make, and if you’re as obsessed with these as I am, be sure to check out some of the others! I think loveys make great gifts; they’re fun toys for kids to play with but also cute and snuggly little blankets when it’s time for a nap. Plus, they’re a lot faster to make than plushies or full baby blankets, so they work well for last-minute gifts too!
