Crossover Baby Booties: Free Knit Baby Booties Pattern (2 versions)

Today I have a very simple pattern to share with you guys, and it’s these adorable crossover knit baby booties. This knit baby booties pattern is made using only a few basic knitting techniques, so it’s perfect for beginners who are just getting the hang of knitting. Best of all, unlike scarves, these only take about half an hour to make and you make it with whatever you have in your stash! So, grab your needles, and let’s get started!

These baby booties are basically just two knit rectangles that are sewn together to make the right shape. It’s a great project for when you need something quick and easy, and it works with any craft. You could use this same style to sew a pair of baby booties together with some pretty fabric or you can crochet them! I have written out a similar pattern for crocheted baby booties like these called the Kimono Booties, which you can find in my Beginner’s Guide to Crochet

You might have noticed there are actually two different baby booties in these pictures. They follow the same basic pattern, but for one pair, I worked in stockinette stitch to get that smooth surface and for the other, I used garter stitch. They both have that crossover design, but with different colors and that one small change. There are just a few small differences between the two, but I love them both so I have both patterns written out for you guys.

Garter Stitch version

Rows 1-12: First, cast on 28 (32, 36, 40) stitches. Work 11 rows of garter stitch and bind off, leaving a long tail.

Rows 1- x: Now, cast on 7 stitches for the sole of the bootie, and work in garter stitch until the piece measures 3 inches for newborn size.

For 0-3 months, continue until 3.25 inches,

3.5 for 3-6 months,

3.75 for 6-9 months and

4 inches for 1-year-olds.

Bind off, leaving a long tail.

Using the tapestry needle and the tail of the smaller piece you knit, sew the two pieces to form a T shape. The picture above should be your template for positioning.

Fold one side of the top of the T over to the bottom and sew the short sides together. Also, sew the pieces together along the right edge.

Next, fold the left side over and sew the bootie closed at the toe and along the left edge. To finish, trim any excess yarn and turn the baby booties inside out.

Repeat for the second baby bootie.

All done! You can make these garter stitch baby booties in any color and you can even switch it up by making the sole a different color than the rest or adding a row of another color as trim along the top. Whatever you decide to do, these baby booties will keep little toes snuggly and warm. I like the textured look of the garter stitch, but let’s look at a smoother version with stockinette stitch and a rolled cuff. Let’s take a look at that knit baby booties pattern next!

Stockinette Stitch Version

Rows 1-14: Cast on 28 (32, 36, 40) stitches and work in stockinette stitch for 13 rows. Bind off, leaving a long tail.

Rows 1-x: Cast on 7 stitches for the sole (which I did in brown yarn) and work in garter stitch until the piece measures 3 inches for newborn size.

For 0-3 months, continue until 3.25 inches,

3.5 for 3-6 months,

3.75 for 6-9 months and

4 inches for 1-year-olds.

Sew the sole piece to the center of the longer piece to form a T. Fold the sides of the longer piece to the edge of the toe, with the stockinette facing inside, and sew the edges up as you did for the garter stitch booties. Then, trim any excess yarn and turn the bootie inside out. This step turns the stockinette side out and the extra rows will form the rolled cuff of these baby booties.

Repeat for the second baby bootie.

When I try to make the 3 months size you said to do 3.25” for everyone sole part of the bootie. But because the top part is too smal it make it impossible to align and see together. I think maybe your cast on only works for newborn size? If not what am I doing wrong?

You also need to make the top part longer to go around the sole. Work another 5 or 6 rows to make up for that. I forgot to include that, so I'll be sure to update it!

I made this pattern and it was very small.... like to fit a preemie.... what baby has a 2 inch length Foot?

These were sized for a newborn, but you can easily make them larger by working a few more rows.
