Are you ready for another free Halloween crochet pattern? I have the best time designing my Halloween plushies and today’s pattern is no exception, even though I had a bit of trouble deciding how I wanted this one to look. This is Patches the Scarecrow and he is the 6th pattern in my Sweet and Spooky Halloween Plushies. Keep reading to find out how to make him, and where to find the patterns for all the other Halloweeny patterns!

I knew I needed a scarecrow for one of my free Halloween crochet patterns this year, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted him to look. Most of my patterns for these plushies are a “creepy but cute” look, but for this guy, he kind of just looked like a farmer for the longest time.
So I put him away and came back to him with a few accessories that I hope make him look like more of a friendly scarecrow! I gave him a scythe and added some patches to the overalls to make it look a little less neat, but I think the too-big smile really brought it together. All of these accessories are super easy to make though so don’t worry if you’re new to this!
For the scythe, I actually just crocheted around a wooden stick to make it quick and easy. I also hate crocheting small tubes and this way was much faster and sturdier than it would have been otherwise. And because I love removable accessories, yes, the overalls are a separate piece too!
The full free pattern is written out below. For those who’d prefer to print the pattern and take it with you for on-the-go and to markup as you go, you can buy the inexpensive printable PDF from my Etsy and Ravelry shops. The PDF is formatted without ads or comments, so it’s easy to read.

Scythe:
Handle: With brown yarn, create a slip knot and SC around a 12″ wooden stick. This is the same as if you would SC normally, but the stick will be in the middle and the yarn gets wrapped around it. Continue to the end of the stick and BO. Superglue, or hot glue, the ends of the yarn in place on either side. Twist the bumps of the stitches around to get a gnarled look – if you keep them lined up evenly, it doesn’t look like a wooden handle as much.
Blade:
Row 1: starting with a long tail, chain 9, turn, and SC along the row (8).
Rows 2-10: SC in each space along.
Row 11: Sc to the last 2 stitches, decrease once (7).
Row 12: SC in each space along.
Repeat rows 11 & 12 until you only have 1 stitch left, then slip stitch around the entire piece for a clean edge. Fold the wide end of the handle and sew it in place with the long tail you left earlier. To make the blade sturdier, you can thread a thing flexible wire through it or make two and SC them together around the edges, but I left mine as is.
Assembly
Now that we have all the parts of our free Halloween crochet pattern ready, we can start assembling Patches the Scarecrow! Add stuffing to the legs, body, and arms if you haven’t already. Then use the tail yarn you left to sew the arms onto the body. Use the tail from the legs to attach the legs to the body.
Next, use the tail from the body to attach the head, going through one space on the body to one space on the head. You’ll be going through the neck ruffle and sewing to the bottom of the head. This makes sure that the head doesn’t wobble around. Use some black yarn and a backstitch to create the outline of a smile on the face. Then go back through those backstitches and weave the yarn through them to make the line more solid. Secure the yarn and trim the yarn, tucking the excess back into the head.
Then put on the overalls and add a drop of hot glue to secure straps to the front of the pants.
Optionally, stitch it in place for better hold. And then put his hat on. Glue or stitch it in place if you want to. I left all the clothing items removable so that he has a work outfit and pajamas! Optionally, use some yarn scraps and embroider patches on the overalls. Weave in any loose ends and you’re finished with your scarecrow! Optionally, use some yarn scraps and embroider patches on the overalls.
And you’re finished!
