A pirate fit for the high seas! This is Percival the Pirate and he is the latest buddy in our Bech buddies collection. It has been so much fun making and sharing these beach and seaside-themed plushies, but I think this is my favorite one of the bunch. Crocheting accessories for my toys is always a fun challenge and I had fun making his peg leg and bandanna. So, let’s get onto the free crochet pattern!
Percy always hated water when he was little. He didn’t know how to swim and he was so afraid of being pulled out to sea. But one day, he decided he would be brave. He learned how to swim, and eventually, Percy wasn’t afraid anymore! He was suddenly drawn to the ocean and wanted to explore as far and wide as he could! So he decided that he was going to be a pirate and sail the open seas with others who loved to explore!

Materials:
- 3.25mm crochet hook / D hook*
- #4 medium weight yarn – I used Yarn Bee Soft Secret in Biscuit, Black, White, Navy, Cocoa and Red
- stitch markers*
- tapestry needle*
- 9mm safety eyes*
- Polyfill stuffing*

Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- SC – single crochet
- DC – double crochet
- HDC – half double crochet
- sl – slip stitch
Pattern Notes:
- Skill level: Intermediate – some amigurumi experience is helpful but not necessary
- Sizing: 10″ tall
- Gauge: 6S X 5R per inch
Useful Amigurumi Tips
- All patterns are in English and written in standard USA terms
- inc – increase by working 2 stitches into the same space
- dec – decrease across 2 stitches using an invisible decrease
- Keep stitches tight to prevent holes for stuffing to show through. If there are holes, go down a hook size.
- All pieces are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated. Use stitch markers to mark the first stitch of each round.
- Safety eyes are used in these patterns, but feel free to stitch on eyes instead for children under 3 years old.

Percival the Pirate Plushie: Free Crochet Pattern
Head:
Round 1: With yarn in Biscuit (skin color), create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker.
Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).
Round 3: *SC, inc* around (18).
Round 4: *SC 2, inc* around (24).
Round 5: *SC 3, inc* around (30).
Round 6: *SC 4, inc* around (36).
Round 7: *SC 5, inc* around (42).
Rounds 8-16: SC around for 9 rounds. Insert safety eyes to round 5 after the last increase round, about 5 stitches apart. Start to add the stuffing.
Round 17: *SC 5, dec* around (36).
Round 18: *SC 4, dec* around (30).
Round 19: *SC 3, dec* around (24).
Round 20: *SC 2, dec* around (18). Finish adding stuffing.
Round 21: *SC, dec* around (12).
Round 22: Decrease around (6). Cut the yarn and thread the tail through a tapestry needle. Run the needle under the front loops of each stitch and secure the yarn. Weave in the end.
Arms (make 2):
Round 1: With yarn in Biscuit (skin color), create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).
Rounds 3-7: SC around for 5 rounds.
Rounds 8-19: Switch to White yarn and SC around for 12 rounds, alternating between white and navy every 2 rounds. Then BO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Full Leg:
Round 1: With Black yarn, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).
Rounds 3-25: SC for 22 rounds. Then BO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Peg Leg:
Round 1: With Black yarn, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).
Rounds 3-12: SC for 10 rounds. Then BO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Add some stuffing to the end of the leg.
Round 1: With brown yarn, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2-9: SC around for 8 rounds.
Round 10: *SC, inc* around (9)
Round 11: SC around for 1 round.
Round 12: *SC, inc* around 4 times, SC into the last space (13).
Round 13: SC around for 1 round. BO and leave a long tail. Place the half leg into the curve of the peg leg and use a tapestry needle and the tail yarn to whipstitch around and attach the pieces together as one leg.
Body:
Round 1: With yarn in black, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).
Round 3: *SC, inc* around (18).
Round 4: *SC 2, inc* around (24).
Round 5: *SC 3, inc* around (30).
Round 6: *SC 4, inc* around (36).
Round 7: *SC 5, inc* around (42).
Rounds 8-16: Switch to white and, alternating between white and navy every 2 rounds, SC around for 9 rounds.
Round 17: *SC 5, dec* around (36).
Round 18: SC around for 2 rounds.
Round 19: *SC 4, dec* around (30).
Rounds 20-21: SC around for 2 rounds.
Round 22: *SC 3, dec* around (24).
Rounds 23-24: SC around for 2 rounds
Round 25: *SC 2, dec* around (18).
Rounds 26-27: Switch to the skin color yarn and SC around for 2 rounds. Then BO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Bandanna:
Round 1: With red yarn, create a magic loop and work 6 SC into it. Place a stitch marker.
Round 2: Inc in each space by working 2 SC into each (12).
Round 3: *SC, inc* around (18).
Round 4: *SC 2, inc* around (24).
Round 5: *SC 3, inc* around (30).
Round 6: *SC 4, inc* around (36).
Round 7: *SC 5, inc* around (42).
Round 8: *SC 6, inc* around (48).
Rounds 9-13: SC around for 5 rounds.
Round 14: Chain 16, turn, and SC 64 stitches around. Chain 16, turn, and SC 15. BO and weave in the end.
Assembly
Now that we have all the parts of our crochet pirate pattern ready, we can start assembling! Add stuffing to just the ends of the arms and legs, and all of the body if you haven’t already. Then position the arms along the sides and use the tail yarn to sew them in place, making sure to align the stripes. Use the tail yarns from the legs to attach the legs to the body as well.
Next, use the tail from the body to attach the head, going through one space on the body to one space on the head. Use pins to hold it in place as you sew and go through each space around. This makes sure that the head doesn’t wobble around. Place the bandanna on the head. If you want, you can stitch it in place with the beginning tail at the center or use hot glue.
Thread a tapestry needle with black embroidery floss and embroider on two thick lines over each eye for angry eyebrows. Stitch a diagonal line for the mouth. Secure the ends, trim the floss and tuck the excess inside the head. Thread the needle with yarn in the same color as the face and stitch across 3 spaces in the center of the face 4-5 times to make the nose. Secure the yarn and tuck the ends inside. Weave in any other ends and trim the excess yarn to finish.
And you’re done!
The little pirate plushie may be a grump but he’s such a cutie! I loved making his peg leg and the bandanna. I was tempted to match an eye patch as well, but then I decided it would be too much. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
