Stripey Days: Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

This week, I have a crochet pattern for the easiest and squishiest baby blanket! While trying to work my way through my stash, I noticed I had quite a lot of certain yarns. I’ve been working with a lot of Bernat Blanket yarn over the year and I’ve ended up with bits of different colors left over. I wanted to make something out of all those scraps, so I decided a stripey blanket would work. I love the way it turned out and I hope you give it a go! Let’s get into the free crochet baby blanket pattern!

I used up my stash for this blanket, and you can use whatever you have on hand as well. Keep in mind that you use yarn of the same weight if you want it to be consistent thickness. Or you can just grab the yarn you need. Bernat Blanket yarn comes in balls of 300g and 150g so the smaller ones would be perfect for this project. My main colors are red and white since I had a lot more of the red and white from my C2C Heart Blanket pattern

I made this crochet baby blanket pattern in about a day and a half, just working on it in the evenings as I watched TV.  I absolutely love how cozy and plush this baby blanket is and that it only took me a little while to make. Because this blanket was made with the scraps that I had, it was also an awesome stash buster and helped clear out a lot of space to use this thick yarn.

If you make yours using up your stash, it may look a little different just depending on what you have, but you can also use this pattern for a number of other yarns and colors! It’s a really versatile blanket and it’s all HDC, perfect for an easy “break” project!

Row 1: With white yarn, chain 53, turn and HDC along starting from the second space from the hook (52).

Rows 2-4: HDC all in white.

Rows 5-6: Drop the white and switch to red. HDC all in red. You’ll be carrying the white yarn up the side of the blanket so there are fewer ends to weave in at the end.

Rows 7-8: HDC all in white.

Rows 9-54: Continue in HDC, alternating with 2 rows of a color, then 2 rows of white. My blanket went from red, orange, yellow, blue, and repeated 3 times, ending with a red stripe.

Rows 54-58: HDC 4 rows in white.

Border: Using any color you want, SC all the way around the blanket for 1 round. Then BO and weave in the ends. Trim the excess yarn to finish and you’re done!

I love how this blanket turned out and I hope you make one too! It’s a fun and easy project, and it’s also a great use of all that leftover yarn I had laying around. I’ll be repurposing a spare closet in my house into a new storage space for my yarn soon, and I’m slowly working on using up what I can before then. I’ll have a whole video and post up about the new yarn storage and organization once that’s up but one thing that’s really helped is using my Yarn Stash tracker.

This tracker is just one page from my Make it Happen: Designer Pack. It has spaces to jot down the name, brand, color, dye lot, amount, and price of the yarn you have so you can plan your projects and keep track of what you already own. You can grab the tracker page for free above or check out the full Designer Pack here.
